MERCED, Calif. — Fresno Pacific men's basketball fell to UC Merced 61-57 in a tightly contested matchup on Friday night. The Sunbirds led by one at halftime but were unable to maintain their advantage in the second half, despite forcing 22 turnovers and netting 10 steals. UC Merced capitalized on its opportunities at the free-throw line, making 15 of 22 attempts to secure the win.
Fresno Pacific opened the first half by establishing an early advantage with a layup by
Seth Brown at 19:15, assisted by
Gabriel Quiette, setting the tone for a tightly contested half. Despite multiple lead exchanges, the Sunbirds' defense forced 14 turnovers, leading to crucial scoring opportunities. In the closing moments,
Hugo Gonzalez Garcia hit a decisive 3-pointer at 00:29, assisted by Quiette, to edge the 'Birds ahead. The first half concluded with Fresno Pacific leading UC Merced 31–30.
Fresno Pacific made a push midway through the second half with Brown's 3-pointer at 12:36, narrowing the gap to 44–39. Despite an effort to rally, including Brown's layup and free throw with 3:17 remaining, which brought the score to 56–53, FPU was unable to overtake UC Merced. The Bobcats maintained their advantage, closing out the half and the game with a 61–57 victory. The Blue and Orange ended the game with 57 points, compared to UC Merced's 59.
Brown scored 16 points and collected eight rebounds, leading the team in both categories.
Loukas Jones contributed with four assists and two steals, providing defensive support. Quiette recorded two steals and three rebounds, though he fouled out of the game.
Harrison Pennisi added five points and secured four rebounds, while also making two steals.
