Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sunbirds Spread Their Wings in Home Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team battled against Cal State Los Angeles in the first home match of the season. Despite a strong effort in the second half, the Sunbirds fell behind the Golden Eagles, losing the close match 71-87.

Fresno Pacific initiated the game with an early lead, as Seth Brown connected on a three-pointer just 33 seconds into the half. Despite CSULA's initial lead over FPU, Amar Hot brought the Sunbirds back within range with a three pointer at 11:32, making it 10-16. Fighting through the Golden Eagle's defense, Brandon Gibson Jr. made a layup just beneath the glass to close the gap a bit more. Soon after, an insane step-back three pointer by Abram Potts, 17-20. Although the Sunbirds maintained momentum through a balanced offensive effort, Cal State LA gained control midway through the half, capitalizing on defensive turnovers and extending their lead with consistent scoring, making it 43–33 at halftime.

The Sunbirds struggled to gain momentum in the second half, despite a strong effort from Brown, who scored with consistent free throws and a 3-pointer at the 7:33 mark. Harrison Pennisi also contributed significantly with multiple layups, adding a layup at 8:20 with an assist from Potts. However, CSULA maintained control with timely scoring runs, extending their lead with a combination of three-pointers and fast-breaks.

Throughout the half, Fresno Pacific faced challenges with turnovers, which hindered their scoring opportunities. With Cal State LA capitalizing on these mistakes, the game concluded with Cal State LA securing an 87–71 win.

Brown led the team with 23 points, converting five 3-pointers and collecting seven rebounds. Pennisi added 12 points and grabbed nine boards. Liam Switzer contributed with six points and recorded two blocks. Hot finished with 11 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
