Down to the Wire: Sunbirds Fall 1-2 To Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. - The PacWest Team of the Week hit a little resistance in the non-conference match against Azusa Pacific on Saturday evening. The 'Birds attempted a comeback from a 2-0 deficit with Lucas Ribeiro blazing ahead and scoring the sole Sunbird goal of the game.

The first half between Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific began with both teams probing for openings but neither able to capitalize early. The Sunbirds managed to apply pressure, with shots from Jesus Martinez Anguiano and Julian Aran Martin, though neither found the target. Ribeiro's attempt in the 22nd minute was saved, and his subsequent effort narrowly missed the top left corner.

Fresno Pacific's defensive efforts kept APU from breaking through, despite several attempts on goal by the home team, including a shot by Orlando Valencia-Jimenez that went wide. The half concluded with both teams unable to convert their opportunities, leading to a scoreless draw at halftime.

The second half commenced with the Sunbirds aiming to overturn the deficit. However, APU struck early when Andrew Gomez scored in the 47th minute, giving the home team a 1-0 lead. Fresno Pacific responded with increased pressure, highlighted by Macias's corner kick in the 48th minute, but their efforts were temporarily stifled by an offside call.

APU extended their advantage in the 64th minute netting another goal to bring the score to 2-0. The 'Birds were undettered, and their persistence paid off in the 72nd minute when Ribeiro scored with assists from Macias and Ramirez, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Despite multiple attempts, including a close shot by Chris Meza, the Sunbirds could not find an equalizer, and the half concluded with Azusa Pacific maintaining a 2-1 lead.

NEXT UP: The Sunbirds face off against conference opponent Westmont on Saturday, Oct. 11th at 7:30 pm. Come cheer on your 'Birds at Ramirez Field!
