MERCED, Calif.- Eight different Sunbirds combined for 15 goals as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds secured a 15-11 over the UC Merced Bobcats Saturday afternoon.
The Sunbirds came out strong, quickly answering the Bobcats early goal with one from
Pietro Cattano, assisted by
Jake Canalas, just 20 seconds later.
Forrest Gray scored twice in quick succession to give the Sunbirds their first lead of the game 3-2.
UC Merced would add another pair of goals before Fresno Pacific answered with another from Cattano to close the first period with a 4-4 tie.
Period two was all Fresno Pacific as they outscored UC Merced five to one.
Canalas opened the period with a goal followed shortly by another from Cattano, his third of the match.
Additional goals came from
Blake Johnson,
Tristan Fox, and
Chris Sandino to extend the Sunbird's lead 9-5 to start the third period.
The scoring continued for the 'Birds into the third as they added an additional five goals to the Bobcats two.
Fresno Pacific found success early on back-to-back offensive possessions with goals from Fox and Sandino.
Gray and Cattano continued the scoring with goals of their own, with
Christian Clark finishing the period with a goal of his own to give the Sunbirds a comanding 14-7 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth, UC Merced attempted a comeback scoring four goals to the Sunbirds one from
Martin Angelov, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
The Sunbirds will look to take this momentum into next week as they head to the Gary Troyer Tournament in Southern California October 4-5th.
