Fresno Pacific Drop a Pair on Day One of the Gary Troyer Tournament

ORANGE, Calif.- Day one of the Gary Troyer Tournament failed to go the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds way as they dropped a pair of games to the Westcliff Warriors and the #12 UC San Diego Tritons Friday.

GAME ONE

The first game was an early morning matchup with the Westcliff Warriors.

Period one opened with both teams scoring on their first two opportunities to knot the score at 2-2.

The Warriors went on a unanswered four goal run to take the lead.

Two goals in the final minute came from Forrest Gray and Pietro Cattano to bring the 'Birds back within two ending the first period down 6-4.

Westcliff maintained their momentum to open the second period scoring another pair of goals to extend their lead.

The Sunbirds managed to add four more goals from Gray, Cattano, and Jordan Lambert, but still trailed 11-8 heading into the third.

Period three was a defensive battle, with both teams only scoring a pair of goals.

The Sunbirds finally found their way offensively in the fourth chipping away at the Warriors lead.

The game came down to final minute as Cattano scored in the final 90 seconds, to bring the 'Birds back within one 16-15.

Hope for the Sunbirds was short lived however as Westcliff sealed the game with a goal with less than 30 seconds left securing a 17-15 victory.

Gray beat his career record, scoring seven goals, with Cattano behind him with five.

GAME TWO

The evening game featured a tough matchup with the #12 Tritons of UC San Diego.

The Tritons came out hot scoring on back-to-back possessions to open the game.

Fresno Pacific finally broke through off a pair of powerplays with goals from Tristain Fox and Christian Clark

UC San Diego added two more to their total closing the first 4-2.

The second period and third period was all Tritons as they scored nine goals unanwered shutting the 'Birds out in the second and only allowing one in the third.

The Sunbirds managed to add one more in the fourth, but the Tritons added four to take close out the game 18-4.

Fresno Pacific will be back in action tomorrow with another double header against their WWPA East rival the McKendree Bearcats at 9:20am and Loyola Marymount at 5:20pm.
