FPU Drops Series to Westmont

FRESNO, Calif.- The middle innings saw both games of the double header slip away from the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (17-17 overall, 8-12 PacWest) by scores of 6-1 and 18-8 to the Westmont Warriors (26-9-3 overall, 17-2-1 PacWest) Monday night at the FPU Diamond.

The Sunbirds scored an early run, benefitting from a walk by Westmont starter Sean Youngerman to Trent Mallonee.

Andrew Valdez doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third before a Donte Valdez sacrifice fly scored the games first run.

FPU's starter Riley Creech was solid, retiring Westmont in order in the first and keeping them scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd innings as well.

But Westmont tallied a pair of runs in the fourth to take the lead and piled on a three run fifth to jump in front 5-1.

Youngerman locked in for Westmont and threw six scoreless innings to finish after the 7th and stand in line for the win.

The Warriors added an insurance run in the ninth to take the game 6-1.

In game two, Westmont homered in the first at bat of the game but freshman Craig Yanigahara got out of the inning with no further damage.

The Sunbirds took advantage of 3 hit batters and 2 walks in the bottom of the inning to push across two runs without a hit and take the lead.

Ethan Tsui then drove in two more to make it 4-1 and Justin Tiger doubled in two more runs. In all the Sunbirds held a 7-1 lead after the first.

Westmont got a run back in the 2nd but exploded for 13 runs in the 3rd, ultimately turning the game around.

Each team scored in the fifth but Westmont added two runs in the 6th to finish the series.

Fresno Pacific hits the road on Friday to begin a four-game series against Biola in La Mirada.
