Rodriguez Dazzles Again as 'Birds Split at Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Behind strong pitching in game two, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (17-15 overall, 8-10 PacWest) bounced back to grab a split with the conference leading Westmont Warriors (24-9-3 overall, 15-2-1 PacWest) Saturday afternoon at Russell Carr Field.

The Sunbirds utilized another strong start from Jaylen Rodriguez in game two and the fourth save of the year from Josiah O'Bannon to hand the Warriors just their second PacWest loss ever.

Westmont jumped out to the early lead with a two-run inning in the bottom of the first.

The game remained 2-0 until the 6th when Westmont added an insurance run on a wild pitch.

Fresno Pacific put together a rally in the 7th when Gabe Henderson singled to start the inning. Andrew Valdez walked and Henderson moved to third on a fly out by Donte Valdez.

Tommy Rover got FPU on the board with a groundout that plated Henderson and pulled FPU back within two.

But Westmont answered with two more in the bottom of the 7th and held FPU quiet the rest of the way to finish the 5-1 game 1.

In game two, Jaylen Rodriguez traded zeroes with Wesmont's starer for the first three innings.

Rodriguez recorded five of the first nine outs via strike out.

The Sunbirds broke the scoreless tie in in the top of the fourth to give Rodriguez some support.

Andrew Valdez singled with one out and stole second before two were out. Rover doubled in in Valdez to give FPU the lead.

The 'Birds added another run in the 5th after two were out as Justin Tiger and Trent Mallonee each singled.

Henderson singled in Tiger to make it 2-0 FPU.

Westmont answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run but Rodriguez made it through the fifth, working around a single and a walk, by getting a groundout and two fly outs to end the inning.

Josiah O'Bannon entered in the sixth and retired the side in order.

Henderson drove in Mallonee after a two out walk and steal to extend the lead to 3-1.

O'Bannon stayed on for the 7th and worked around a leadoff double, keeping the tying run at the plate to secure the save and the win for Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds and Warriors will complete the series in Fresno on Monday with a double-header beginning at 2pm.
