FRESNO, Calif.- After pitching helped dictate the first two games of the series, offense tilted Tuesday's doubleheader away from the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (16-14 overall) in a pair of non-conference losses to the Biola Eagles (16-20-1 overall) at the FPU Diamond.
Â
The 'Birds lost 15-3 in the first game of the day and dropped the second game 11-9.
Â
Walks plagued FPU throughout the day as they used 15 different pitchers between the two games but surrendered 24 walks in 14 innings.
Â
In game one, FPU was only able to answer crooked numbers by Biola in the odd numbered innings with single runs in the first, third, and fifth.
Â
After Biola came out hitting to get 11 hits over the first four innings, the walks piled up in the final innings to end the game after 7 using the run rule.
Â
Trent Mallonee was 3-3 before being lifted late in the game.
Â
Game two started with Fresno Pacific starter
Gino Helmuth aggressively attacking the zone and retiring Biola in order.
Â
With the game scoreless, Biola struck for three runs in the 2
nd inning to jump back in front.
Â
The Sunbirds responded with a bases loaded RBI single from
Gabe Henderson.
Â
Andrew Valdez followed that up with a grand slam down the left field line to give FPU its first lead of the day at 5-3.
Â
Biola responded with three more runs in the top of 3
rd to take a 6-5 lead.
Â
Henderson lifted a sac fly to right field to tie the game in the bottom of the inning before Valdez tripled home a run to push FPU in front 7-6.
Â
The 'Birds took a 9-6 lead in the 4
th on
Shane Pursell's two-run single.
Â
But the offense slowed for FPU and Biola put up five runs over the final three innings to force the split of the four game series.
Â
Fresno Pacific returns to conference play on Saturday, heading to Westmont for the first doubleheader. The Sunbirds return to Fresno on Monday, April 8
th to complete the series against the Warriors.
