SURPRISE, Arizona- It was heartbreak in the desert for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds who dropped their opening round match in the PacWest Tournament 4-3 to the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans at the Surprise Tennis Center Wednesday morning.
The Sunbirds came out hot, with the doubles team of Daimy Paula and Halle Faherty taking the easy victory on Court 3, 6-1.Â
On Court 2, Audrey Ouellet and Malia Mitchell secured a massive come from behind win 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for the 'Birds.Â
Yume Ueoku and Nayuma Subba were on serve 6-5 on Court 1 when play was halted.Â
In the singles, Subba kept the Sunbirds rolling with a dominant straight set win 6-0, 6-1 on Court 1 to put the 'Birds up 2-0.Â
The Vulcans stormed back to take the lead with three straight victories on Courts 4, 3, and 6.Â
Ueoku evened the score for the Sunbirds with another straight set victory on Court 2, 6-2, 6-4.Â
The deciding match came down to Court 5 where Paula was locked in a back-and-forth battle.
Paula dropped the first set 6-4, but stormed back from down early to take the second 7-5.
It all came down to a third set where Paula fought until the very end, but ultimately fell 6-1 in the third giving the Vulcans the clinching point at 4-3.Â
Fresno Pacific will advance to the Consolation bracket where they will face Stanislaus State on Friday at 1pm.
