FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds proved their is no place like home Saturday as they beat the Cal State Monterey Bay Sea Otters 12-5 to open WWPA play.
The 'Birds captured the early lead with a pair of goals from Emily Lopez-Ibarra and Hannah Walker all while holding the Otters scoreless to end the first period 2-0.
To open the second, both teams traded goals with Natalie Kisling converting for the Sunbirds off the pass from Regan Azevedo.
With the 3-1 lead, Fresno Pacific added to their lead with a trio of goals from Tatum Benson, Kisling, and Alli Hepner taking the 6-2 lead into the third.
The offense continued to click for the Sunbirds in the third as Lopez-Ibarra and Hepner converted for their second goals on the day.
With a minute left in the third both teams scored on back-back possessions with Maggie Cook scoring for the 'Birds as they took a five goal lead to close the third.
The Otters opened the fourth with a goal of their own to bring themselves back within four, but it was as close as they would get as the Sunbirds scored three more goals to shut the door.
The last three goals for the 'Birds came Bella Alcazar, Walker, and Benson to take the victory 12-5.
In a game they never trailed, Fresno Pacific offense was clicking as they scored at least two or more goals each quarter.
Seven different Sunbirds combined for all 15 goals.
Defensively, Katie Whittingham delivered a strong game in goal with 12 saves while her teammates recorded seven steals.
Fresno Pacific will look to continue their three game winning streak as they head to La Mirada for a midweek matchup against the Biola Eagles Wednesday at 1pm.
