SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A tightly contested match failed to go the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds way as they were overcome by the Menlo College Oaks Thursday afternoon at the Cornado Tennis Center 4-3.
The Oaks and the Sunbirds split the first two doubles matches with the Oaks securing the 6-3 win on Court 1, while Gregor Kliimask and Martin Ramirez took the win 6-3 on Court 3.
On Court 2, Ben Cronau and Sven Bangert managed to force a tie break at 6-6, but fell in the tie breaker 7-2 to give the Oaks the match and the doubles point.
In the singles, the Sunbirds evened the score with a straight set victory on Court 6 with a strong performance from Angel Espnana 6-1, 6-4.
Menlo countered back with a win on Court 4 to jump back ahead.
To even the score, Ben Cronau completed the comeback on Court 2.
After dropping the first 6-1, Cronau turned the match around to win set two 6-4 and the tie breaker 10-7 for the 'Birds second victory of the day.
The Oaks took the next two in a pair of tightly contested matches that could've gone either way on Courts 3 and 5 clinching the victory for Menlo.
In the final match of the day on Court 1, Ravi Nelson also managed a come from behind win after dropping the first 6-2, won the second 6-3, and then won the back-and-forth tie breaker 12-10.
The Sunbirds will look to bounce back on Saturday against PacWest opponent Westmont College at 9am in Santa Barbara.
