Sizzling Sunbird Offense Stops Sharks' Streak

WAIPAHU, Hawaii- It didn't take long for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (9-7 overall, 6-5 PacWest) to get the offense going in a 5-1 and 7-5 doubleheader sweep of the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (13-6 overall, 5-3 PacWest) Wednesday afternoon.

FPU snapped HPU's four-game win streak and assures the Sunbirds of a .500 road trip at minimum.

The Sunbirds did not wait around this time to get on the board after hits by Trent Mallonee and Gabe Henderson started the game.

Andrew Valdez's sacrifice fly brought home a run before Donte Valdez singled home Henderson for a 2-0 lead.

HPU got a run back in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half.

Mallonee and Henderson were at it again in the second, this time with two outs.

Mallonee singled up the middle to extend the inning before Henderson plastered a home run to open it up to 4-1.

That was plenty for Connor Semone who, on his way to his fourth win of the year, scattered seven base runners in seven innings while allowing just one unearned run.

The 'Birds added one more in the top of the eighth on Andrew Valdez's fifth homer of the season.

Riley Creech threw two scoreless innings to close out the win for FPU.

Early offense was the key again in game two as Donte Valdez singled in Andrew Valdez in the first for the 1-0 lead.

Justin Tiger's two run triple in the second was backed by Mallonee's RBI groundout, which scored Tiger, for a 4-0 FPU lead after two.

The 'Birds delivered all the cushion they would need in the third when Jordan Smith singled in two runs.

Tiger doubled home Smith to push the lead to 7-0.

HPU tallied all of their runs against Gino Helmuth from the third inning on.

Helmuth finished after 4.1, allowing 4 runs, but stood in line to pick up his second win of the year.

Jaylen Rodriguez stemmed the tide, with a pair of strikeouts in the fifth, and worked the final two innings as well to close the double-header sweep.

The series concludes with a double-header on Thursday, wrapping up the Sunbirds weeklong 8 game road trip, beginning at 1pm (Pacific).
