Game Recap: Baseball |

Sunbirds Win Road Series at HPU

WAIPAHU, Hawaii- Pulling away in the back half of game 1, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (10-8 overall, 6-6 PacWest) secured the series victory with a 12-6 win before falling 4-3 in the finale to the Hawaii Pacific Sharks (14-7 overall, 6-4 PacWest) Thursday afternoon.

Gabe Henderson reached base six times in the first game and drove in three runs as FPU scored ten runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to open up a tight ball game.

The 'Birds were trailing 1-0 in the third when Trent Mallonee's two run blast gave them the lead.

Hawai'i Pacific flipped the scoreline in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

The Sunbirds loaded the bases in the sixth before Andrew Valdez was plunked to force in a run. Donte Valdez forced home a run on a fielder's choice and Chris Clement walked to regain the 5-4 lead.

FPU capitalized on what was ruled on error on Mallonee's knock that plated two Sunbirds in the 7th. Henderson singled home another before Donte Valdez blasted a home run to give FPU a 10-4 lead.

The 'Birds opened up even more in the 8th when Henderson's two-run single put him on base for the 6th time in the game.

HPU got two back in the 9th, but the Sunbirds wrapped up the series victory with a 12-6 win.

Still, with one more to play, Fresno Pacific sent Sam Cooper to the mound in the series finale.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when HPU took the lead on a sacrifice fly.

FPU took the lead in its next at bat as Donte Valdez doubled home Henderson and scored on Josh Pernetti's RBI single.

HPU scored two in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead.

The Sunbirds fought until the final out in the seventh as Justin Tiger reached on an error to produce a run and get the tying run to second with one out.

But the tying run would be stranded on third, and the go ahead run on first, as HPU was able to salvage the final game of the series.

Fresno Pacific concludes the road trip at 5-3 and returns home to play Hawai'i Hilo in Fresno for four games beginning on March 15th.
