WAIPAHU, Hawaii- Late offense tilted the scales in both games with the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (7-7 overall, 3-5Â PacWest) split a doubleheader with a 10-9 win and a 2-1 loss to the Chaminade Silverswords (10-11 overall, 3-3 PacWest) Saturday evening.
The Sunbirds offense surged over the last half of game one but saw the pitcher's duel in game two slip away.
FPU took the early lead as
Trent Mallonee singled and scored on an
Andrew Valdez double in the first inning.
But Chaminade jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings thanks to a pair of three-run innings in the 2
nd and 3
rd.
Valdez tripled to start the sixth inning for FPU, scoring on
Donte Valdez's RBI knock.
FPU would load the bases in the inning with Donte coming around on walk issued to
Jordan Smith.
The Sunbirds made it 6-4 at the 7
th inning stretch after
Gabe Henderson's leadoff single sparked the inning.
A couple of wild pitches brought Henderson across.
Chaminade re-extended the lead in the bottom of the seventh, striking for three more runs in the bottom of the 7
th.
The Sunbirds exploded for six runs in the 8
th after a leadoff walk to
Chris Clement.
Justin Tiger doubled and then
Austin Cappas' pinch-hit double plated a pair of runs.
Henderson doubled home Cappas before
Andrew Valdez's ground-rule double scored Henderson, pulling FPU within one.
Donte Valdez singled home Andrew to tie the game.
Clement completed the comeback, and the inning, with an RBI single to put FPU up 10-9.
Riley Creech got the final two outs to earn his second save of the season.
Creech came on in relief of
Ian Mortensen, FPU's third pitcher of the game, who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings.
Mortensen got 5 of the 7 outs he recorded via the strikeout, only allowing two baserunners on walks.
In game two, FPU got out to a 2
nd inning lead after
Griffith Fenn reached on an error to start the inning.
After Clement walked,
Jacob Solorio bunted the runners over to 2
nd and 3
rd and Smith grounded out to score Fenn.
FPU starter
Sam Cooper scattered four baserunners over the first three innings, walking three and surrendering just one hit to preserve the lead.
Cooper retired the side in order in the fourth before giving way to Cam Gallardo in the bottom of the fifth after a walk.
Chaminade used a sacrifice bunt and a single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Silverswords strung together two more singles to take a 2-1 lead after five innings.
That proved to be the difference as FPU settled for the split on the day and the series.
Fresno Pacific remains in Honolulu to play Hawai'i Pacific in a four-game series beginning on Wednesday.
