SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds came up just short Friday afternoon falling 4-3 to the Dominican University Penguins.
Fresno Pacific stated off the match strong taking the doubles point in three hard fought matches.
Elise Leik and Audrey Ouellet dropped the first match on court two falling 6-4.
The Sunbirds evened the score with a win on court one where Nayuma Subba and Yume Ueoku secured a gritty 7-5 victory.
It all came down to court three where Halle Faherty and Daimy Paula were engaged in a back-and forth battle.
At 6-6, Faherty and Paula won the seven point tie breaker taking the set 7-6 (5) to capture the doubles point for the 'Birds.
Up 1-0, the Penguins quickly evened the score with a retirement on court one by Subba.
Dominican took the 3-2 lead with two straight set victories on courts six and two.
The remaining three courts all went into three set/tiebreaker battles.
On court three, Leik secured the first Sunbird singles victory dropping the first 6-3, then completing the two set comeback winning the second 6-2, and the third 7-5.
The Penguins secured the deciding point on court six where Margarita Munoz after winning the first set 6-3, dropped the remaining sets 6-2, 6-4.
In the last and most grueling match of the day, Ouellet took the victory for the Sunbirds.
After winning the first set 7-6, Ouellet dropped the second 6-7, and then took the ten point tie breaker 10-8.
Fresno Pacific will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon with another PacWest matchup against the Academy of Art at 2pm.
