FRESNO, Calif.- Kyle Monk hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to erase a double-digit deficit and force overtime but the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (7-17 overall, 5-11 PacWest) fell 89-82 to the Chaminade Silverswords (10-17, 6-13 PacWest) Monday afternoon in the Special Events Center.
The 'Birds fell behind early as Chaminade connected on 6 of its first 11 three-pointers but hung around thanks to excellent post-play and finishing around the basket.
The first quarter of the game was neck and neck until the 8 minute mark in the half, when Chaminade went on a 20-9 run to close the half.
Avery Lewis was a big factor for FPU scoring nine points early and sustaining the offense but the 'Birds trailed 43-35 at the break.
In the second half, Fresno Pacific trailed by as much as 11 before finding its range behind
Kyle Monk and
Ryan Abbott.
After Abbott hit his second three-pointer of the game to start the second half, Monk added his third of the game and
Alvar Peltoniemi hit another.
The 'Birds completely wiped out the double-digit deficit on an
Isaac Peralta layup, mirroring the first half, with a 58-57 lead under eight minutes to play.
But Chaminade got the advantage right back and walked its lead back to 7 points with just under two minutes to play.
Isaac Peralta drilled a huge three on the next possession and answered a Chaminade jumper with a layup and a free-throw to cut it to one possession with one minute left.
The 'Birds missed their first crack to tie it with 19 seconds left but got the ball back in the same situation with 16 seconds.
Monk buried a right wing three with just 5 seconds remaining, eventually forcing overtime.
In overtime, Chaminade regained its three-point shooting, knocking down one at the very beginning and quickly jumped out to a ten point lead.
Despite the loss, it was the second straight game in which the 'Birds connected on 10 threes after no such games previously this season.
Five different Sunbirds scored double-figures. Lewis and Abbott each had 15, Monk and Peralta each scored 14 and
Harrison Pennisi finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
Fresno Pacific continues its homestand, and busy home week, by welcoming Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
