'Birds Split Final Day of Bulldog Mini

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds split a pair of games at the Bulldog Mini Saturday afternoon defeating the Cal Tech Beavers 16-4 then falling to the Azusa Pacific Cougars 15-5.

GAME ONE

Fresno Pacific jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a pair of goals from Tatum Benson and one from Regan Azevedo

The Beavers broke their scoring drought but the 'Birds quickly answered back on the next possession with a penalty shot goal from Natalie Kisling

To end the first period, The Sunbirds added four more goals with another for Benson and one for Alli Hepner and Maggie Cook to end the first up 7-2.

The offense kept clicking for 'Birds in the second period as they scored another set of goals from Kisling, Hannah Walker, and a pair for Benson while holding the Beavers scoreless.

For the first goal of her Fresno Pacific career, Mackenzie Sepeda found the back of the net to open the scoring for Fresno Pacific in the third period up 12-2.

The Beavers and 'Birds traded goals to end the third with goals from Maddie Murad, Hepner, and Bella Alcazar putting the 'Birds up 15-4.

Both teams were held scoreless for a majority of the fourth period with the lone goal coming from Sierra Coyne for the first goal of her Fresno Pacific career to give the Sunbirds the 16-4 win.

Ten different Sunbirds scored as Benson led all scoring with five followed by Hepner and Kisling with two.

Defensively, the 'Birds dominated holding the Beavers scoreless in the second and fourth periods.

"We had a solid start to the day with a win over Caltech, every player contributed to the win" said head coach Bryan Suhovy.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the day against the Azusa Pacific Cougars, the 'Birds found themselves down early as the Cougars scored six unanswered goals to go up 6-0 in the first period.

The Cougars dominance continued as they scored four more in the second to take an astounding 10-0 lead into the third.

The first goals of the game for the Sunbirds finally came in the third as Benson converted on back-to-back possessions.

Azusa Pacific would add three more to end the third up 13-2.

Benson added to her growing goal total with another to open the fourth for the 'Birds.

The 'Birds would end the fourth with two more goals from E. Cook and Alcazar but it wouldn't be enough as they fell to the Cougars 15-5.

It was a dominant day for Benson who recorded a combined eight goals in both games.

Against Azusa we struggled to finish our opportunities" added Suhovy. "As a team we struggled to finish those shots we created, we did a lot of good things but they simply put away their shots."

Fresno Pacific will head down south to take on the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles Friday at 1pm.
