Bryan Suhovy

Bryan Suhovy has led the Fresno Pacific women’s water polo program since its inception in 2008.  He is the only coach in the program’s history, and from 2007-2024 led the men’s program as well.

Suhovy has produced an astonishing number of All-Americans and All-Conference performers in his 19 seasons at the helm.  Glenn Lyon, the men’s all-time leading scorer, made FPU program history when he was named their first-ever First Team All-American selection.  24 total athletes have earned 39 All-American honors, with 23 being First Team. Amber Penney earned the first-ever First Team honor for the women’s program in 2017, and all-time FPU leading goalscorers Tatum Benson (255) and Sam Witt (170) both hold the distinction of making three consecutive All-American First Teams.  On the men’s side, notable achievements include four First Team honors in 2015, and Bodhi Bowen being named the 2021 ACWPC Division II Player of the Year.  Under Suhovy’s guidance and direction, the Sunbird men have had at least one student-athlete earn First Team All-American status in all but one season since 2012.

In conference play, Suhovy’s men and women have accounted for 58 All-WWPA/All-GCC First Team, Second Team, All-Defensive, and All-Freshman honors and more All-Academic teams honors to count.  Nia Apodoca took home the very first GCC honor for the Sunbirds in 2013, and Amber Penney was named GCC Newcomer of the Year in 2017.  Witt and Benson are also FPU’s only three-time All-WWPA First Team selections.  2024 saw five Sunbird men receive postseason honors from the WWPA.

Suhovy’s coaching career began at Monache High School – his alum – in Porterville for eight seasons, beginning in 2000. He coached the girls for four years, and the boys for four years. The boys were top-4 in CIF all four years, winning back-to-back CIF Championships in 2006 and 2007, and earning three league championships in 2005-07.

From 2000 to 2007, Suhovy was also the head coach for the Monache Water Polo Club Team summer program. They qualified and attended the Junior Olympics six out of his eight years there. From 2005 to 2007 he was the spring semester assistant coach for the CSU Bakersfield women's water polo team.  In the summer of 2008, Suhovy coached at the Pan-Pacific Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

Suhovy played water polo at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa for two years (1998-99) under Coach Chris Oeding. He graduated from the University of La Verne with a Bachelor's degree in liberal studies in 2005, and earned his master’s in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific.

He and his wife Kelly reside in Fresno with their two children.
