FRESNO, Calif.- A hot start fizzled out for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds as they fell 3-1 to the Chaminade Silverswords Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.
The 'Birds came out strong, building a 6-0 lead, executing offensively and capitalizing on Chaminade's early errors.
Key blocks came from
Claire Corippo and
Geneva Elliott along with four service aces to help the Sunbirds gain momentum, extending their lead.
It became close late in the set, but the 'Birds were able to hold off a late Silverswords rally to take the set 25-23.
Chaminade bounced back in the second set, dominating from the start.
The Sunbirds struggled with errors and couldn't find an answer for Chaminade's service game, who recorded multiple aces.
Chaminade won the set decisively as the 'Birds failed to find their rythm.
The third set saw a closer start with both teams trading points.
However, the Sunbirds continue to struggle on the attack.
Coupled with Chaminade's efficient hitting, the Silverswords were able to pull away giving them the 25-17 win.
In the final set, Fresno Pacific had some early success with kills from
Makayla Smith and Gilcrest, but Chaminade's seven service aces in the set and strong blocking efforts sealed the victory.
A late push by the Sunbirds couldn't close the gap and Chaminade took the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
Despite the loss, it was historic night for the Sunbird's
Cambria Waites as she recorded her 1,000 career assist, recording 22 tonight.
Fresno Pacific will regroup as they continue their homestand with a matchup against Menlo College Wednesday night at 6pm in the Special Events Center.
