LOS ANGELES, Calif - Day two of the Gary Troyer Tournament began brightly for the 'Birds, who defeated McKendree 20-11 and noticed their first win of the event. The second game of the day against Division I Loyola Marymount didn't go quite as swimmingly, as FPU fell 28-11.
The Sunbirds never trailed in the first game, and outscored their opponents in all four quarters. Chase Hammes' 10 saves were crucial against the Bearcats, and added 3 steals. Tristan Fox led the scoring for FPU with 4 goals, followed by Pietro Cattano and Jake Canalas with 3 apiece. It was a well-balanced victory that featured plenty of scoring and showcased one of their better defensive showings of the season.
The Lions of LMU were too tough to tame in the afternoon showdown, however. FPU was shut out in the first period, and were never able to match the offensive prowess of the West Coast Conference side. LMU pulled away in the 4th with a run of 5 unanswered goals and the result was all but decided by that point. Cattano added 3 more goals, along with Forrest Gray and big man Christian Clark. Hammes was remarkable once again, notching another 10 saves in the defeat.
The Sunbirds return home to face Delta College on Tuesday at 1pm PT from the Sunnyside Aquatics Complex. The match will be streaming live on the WWPA.
