SANTA CLARA, CALIF.- A hard fought battle failed to go the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds way Friday afternoon as they fell on day one of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament to co-host San Jose State 16-7.
San Jose State took an early lead, capitalizing on multiple opportunities with four goals.
With just 39 seconds left,
Forrest Gray managed to get the Sunbirds on the board, assisted by Tristin Fox, ending the first period 4-1 in favor of the Spartans.
San Jose State extended their lead with a trio of goals ,taking advantage of Fresno Pacific's penalties and exclusions.
Tristin Fox responded with a goal for the Sunbirds, assisted by
Samuel Ramos, and later, Gray scored his second goal of the match.
Despite the 'Birds' efforts, San Jose led 7-3 at the half.
Fresno Pacific fought back in the third, with Christiano Sandino scoring early, assisted by Gray. Ramos and
Pietro Cattano each added goals.
The Spartans kept pace, maintaining their lead at 10-7 as the game entered the final period.
San Jose State sealed their win with a dominant fourth period, scoring six more goals.
Nikita Kravstov scored for Fresno Pacific, assisted by
Cole Sjoblom, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
The game came to a close with San Jose State winning 16-7.
The Sunbirds will look to bounce back tomorrow with a doubleheader starting first with the Air Force Falcons at 10:20am and the Brown Bears at 2:20pm.Â
