Macias Nets Impressive Goal but FPU Falls to CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif.-Chris Macias scored an acrobatic equalizer early but the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-2 overall) ceded a 6-1 scoreline to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (1-0-1 overall) Tuesday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Six minutes in, the Otters found the opener after service into the box set Monterey Bay one on one with the keeper Elmer Carballo, who couldn't deny the point blank shot.

FPU responded almost immediately as Macias crossed a ball to the far left post where Lucas Ribeiro was waiting. Ribeiro delivered the ball back into the box at the edge of the 18' where Macias lofted a shot on a bicycle kick with his back to the goal that arched over the keeper for the equalizer.

Monterey Bay earned a penalty just minutes later when their attack was pulled down in the box and the pk was lasered into the top left corner to put CSUMB back in front at 2-1 after just 12 minutes.

The score remained 2-1 into halftime with FPU ceding 63% of the possession.

CSUMB seemed to threaten more in the opening ten minutes of the 2nd half, breaking through with the third goal on another ball served into the box that was knocked into the goal to give the Otters a 3-1 advantage.

Monterey Bay took advantage of a failed clearance just two minutes later, working a trio of passes from the left side of the box to the right for a shot that caromed off the right post into goal, expanding the difference to three goals in the 58th minute.

The Otters added a fifth on a counterattack in the 68th minute, racing down the left side to extend the lead.

Kevin Closson prevented an Otters goal on a counter in the 83rd minute, hustling back and making a sliding save to kick a sure goal away.

But the Otters would tack on a sixth goal anyway in the 88th minute, as CSUMB wound up with a point blank opportunity that they cashed in.

In a physical match that saw 40 total fouls called, FPU was on the short end of possession and shots with CSUMB tallying 22 shots in the match.

The 'Birds continue on the road Sunday evening, traveling to Cal State Bakersfield for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
