Match Slips Away at Bakersfield After 'Birds Play with 10

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Despite hanging close for the first 45 minutes, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-3 overall) played down a man for nearly two thirds of a 6-1 loss to the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (2-1-2 overall) Sunday night.

Taran Williams tallied a late goal in the 88th minute to prevent the shutout but FPU had few chances the entire night.

The Sunbirds held their own despite giving up a goal in the 8th minute of the match, keeping the scoreline close.

But after a second yellow card to Stephan Morris became an automatic red in the 38th minute, FPU was down to ten players and Bakersfield capitalized. The Roadrunners tacked on a goal just two minutes later to take a 2-0 scoreline into the half.

Bakersfield scored three times in the first eight minutes of the second half to create distance and tacked on their final goal in the 72nd minute.

The Sunbirds continued to challenge with Williams receiving an opportunity from Lucas Ribeiro who assisted on a goal for the third consecutive match.

Elmer Carballo made four saves in the early going for Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds will be anxious to return home on Wednesday night, the site of their last win, taking on Stanislaus State at 7:00 pm on Ramirez Field.
