Nevarez Records 12 Saves as Sunbirds Fall to Top-Ranked Vulcans

FRESNO, Calif.- A five-game homestand for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-8-1 overall, 0-2-1 conference) ended with a 2-0 loss against the PacWest top ranked Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (7-0-1 overall, 3-0 conference).

The Sunbirds best chance of the match came early in the 25th minute as a ball was sent into the box where Alena Schenk fired a shot, but it deflected off a Vulcan to fly out of bounds.

The Sunbirds and the Vulcans continued to trade shots into the final minutes of the 1st half.

With 50 seconds remaining in the half, Vulcans Alyssa Padron broke through off a cross from Adree Johnson to find the back of the net and take the lead 1-0 heading into halftime.

Both teams traded possessions to open the half.

A penalty kick was awarded to Hawaii Hilo in the 53rd minute which they converted to give them a 2-0 advantage.

The Vulcans offense continued to keep Monique Nevarez busy retaining most of the offensive possession and shot attempts.

The 'Birds struggled offensively for the remainder of the half, only recording four shot attempts.

Time expired as the Sunbirds fell 2-0.

Nevarez ended the match with a season tying 12 saves, which many came at crucial times to keep the Vulcans at bay for most of the match.

The Sunbirds will hit the road for their first road conference match of the season against the Westmont Warriors next Saturday at 3:15pm.
