Sunbirds Suffer Narrow Defeat Against Stan State

SURPRISE, Ariz.- A narrow defeat turned into the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (11-8 overall) penultimate match of the season as they dropped a 4-3 match in the first round of the PacWest Tournament to the Stanislaus State Warriors (6-6 overall) Wednesday morning at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.

It was a day of upsets in a place fittingly named Surprise as they Sunbirds were one of three higher seeded teams to get redirected onto the consolation bracket during the tournament's opening day.

Normally, a strong indicator of the Sunbirds success throughout the match, Fresno Pacific struggled in doubles and ceded the first point.

Nayuma Subba and Elise Leik won the first set of doubles for the Sunbirds on court 2 (6-2), but back-to-back wins by Stanislaus State on courts 1 and 2 gave the Warriors the doubles point.

Sanne Brull secured the first point of the day for the Sunbirds with dominant straight sets win on court 3 (6-0, 6-1).

Brull's singles win is her fifth in sixth consecutive matches, improving her season with an outstanding 12-5 overall record.

The Warriors countered back with their first singles point of the day on court 6.

The Sunbirds evened the score with another straight sets win on court 2 by Subba over Zuzanna Dziewiecka (6-2, 6-4). With the win, Subba broke Dziewiecka's five game winning streak.

On court 5, Leik pulled the Sunbirds ahead 3-2 with another straight sets win (6-1, 6-0).

The back-and-forth continued with another win by the Warriors on court 1. Lea Falentin battled hard against the Warrior's Amber Huk, but ultimately lost in the 3rd set (6-0, 3-6, 2-6).

The deciding match of the day came down to a battle on court 4 with Audrey Ouellet and the Warrior's Annabelle Mulick.

Mulick took the first set 6-2 but Ouellet came back to take the 2nd 6-3. In the 3rd set, Mulick ultimately overcame Ouellet 6-4 and won the deciding point and the match for the Warriors 4-3.

The Sunbirds will wrap up the season Thursday at 5pm against Colorado Mesa.
