SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Displaying their growth and resilience, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (9-12 overall) narrowly came up short in a 16-15 double-overtime loss against the Santa Clara Broncos Saturday afternoon.
Â
Hannah Walker scored three times while
Tatum Benson,
Alexandria Jasso,
Rosemary Chapman and
Emma Cook all added multi-score games.
Â
"I'm proud of the grit our girls showed," Fresno Pacific head coach
Bryan Suhovy said. "We were in it the entire time and every team member was a contributor."
Â
The 'Birds were the first to score behind Benson but the teams traded scores until the end of a 3-3 first period.
Â
Santa Clara gained the advantage in the second, scoring three times around goals by Chapman and Walker.
Â
The teams traded three more goals in the third but it was in the fourth period that FPU made its move.
Â
The Sunbirds scored five times in the period, with Cook's 2
nd goal tying the game at 13 and forcing overtime.
Â
Santa Clara scored first but FPU answered behind Jasso. The Broncos responded with two more while FPU was only able to muster one more goal from Benson in response.
Â
Benson also provided the Sunbirds advantage in the game as they center drew four of the 15 exclusions called against Santa Clara and flexed the Broncos depth and defense.
Â
Fresno Pacific used six goals on powerplays to work its way into the extra time but Santa Clara was a much more efficient five of eight on powerplays to seal the game.
Still, it was marked improvement for the Sunbirds who fell by nine to Santa Clara in a matchup in Fresno over a month ago.
Â
"We showed so much growth from the last time we played," Suhovy added. "Although we are bummed about the loss, I feel our spirits are high for conference play next week. We're playing our best when we need too, and we still have room for growth. I'm excited as we head into the final stretch of our season."
Â
The Sunbirds will return to Fresno beginning a week of three home games on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Biola.
