FRESNO, Calif.- The return home came up just short against the conference leaders as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (9-13 overall, 0-2 WWPA) fell 10-7 to the Biola Eagles (12-12 overall, 3-0 WWPA) Tuesday afternoon at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center.
The 'Birds brought the intensity energy to the first quarter, following BU's opening goal with three points of their own.
Hannah Walker led the charge, scoring FPU's first goal, followed by goals from
Bella Alcazar and
Alexandria Jasso.
The Sunbirds capitalized on powerplays, scoring on half of the first four exclusions drawn.
Biola scored to pull within one before the end of the quarter, cutting Fresno Pacific's lead to 3-2.
Regan Azevedo netted the first goal of the second quarter for Fresno Pacific but Biola tallied four times in the 2
nd to grab a 6-5 lead at the half.
The nail-biting third quarter saw back-and-forth scoring, with every goal being closely followed by one for the opposition.
Tatum Benson's lightning quick back-hand set the tone, inspiring fighting effort from both teams.
Benson followed a BU point with another one for FPU followed by two more points for the Eagles, finishing the quarter with a score of 9-7 Biola.
Defense dominated the fourth quarter with just one Biola goal finalizing the score at 10-7.
The Sunbirds received a solid effort from goalie
Katie Whittingham who made 10 saves to help keep FPU close in the 2nd half.
The Sunbirds will return to play at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 at the Sunnyside Aquatic Center to face off against the Merced Bobcats before completing the weekend on Saturday with Senior Day against Cal State Monterey Bay at 1:00 p.m.
