RESULTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- A string of 1-2 finishes powered the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds track and field team to improved NCAA Division II provisional marks at the Mark Conover Classic at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday and Saturday.
The Sunbirds placed in the top two spots in four different events while improving upon a number of national marks that were already under the provisional guidelines.
Madison Flores and
Zara Anthony delivered a historic 100-meter race for Fresno Pacific with the 2
nd and 3
rd fastest times in FPU history. Flores' 11.69 and Anthony's 11.72 are both top ten in the country at 6
th and 7
th respectively.
Iyanna Fuller and
Aubrianna Smith made it a flock of Sunbirds occupying four straight spots at the Conover Classic.
Isaac Davis led the charge on the men's side by winning the 100-meter dash with the second fastest time in Fresno Pacific history at 10.44, placing him 6
th in the entire country this year for the event.
Garrett Fox and
Mark Smith took 4
th and 6
th, respectively, in the same race. Fox, a freshman, cracks the top 50 at number 41 in NCAA Division II and lands 7
th all-time in FPU history.
Smith is now tied for 10
th in Fresno Pacific's top-ten list.
Davis also won the triple jump while going 1-2 with
Adrian Hodges, legging out his teammate by a mere 2 centimeters. Davis' mark of 14.39 and Hodges' mark of 14.37 are top 20 performances in the country.
Davis rounded out his weekend  by delivering a season best 6.97 in the long jump to tie for third at the event.
Fox and Smith went 1-2 in the 200-meter sprint, with Fox coming in a shade under his season best at the Sunbird Invite last month, crossing the line in 21.70. Smith was on his tail with a 21.81 for 2
nd place.
In the 3k,
Jacob Resendez jumped up Fresno Pacific's all-time list five spots to 5th, winning the Conover Classic in 8:30.85. Rodney Chemalmal joined him on the all-time list, cracking the top ten at number 7 with an 8:33.88.
Cullin Bates did his part in the FPU first place finishes, winning both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday.
Bates is now 15
th in the country in the 110-meters, winning the race in 14.42, a season-best. He also posted a 54.86 in the 400-meters.
Of course the FPU women joined in on the wins and national marks with
Brianna Green winning the 400-meter and
Ariana Vera close behind in 4
th.
Hope Erwin continued her stellar season by winning the shot put at 13.34-meters, landing 8
th all-time and putting her in the top 20 of the NCAA Division II.
Alexa Queenan won the women's 3k with a lifetime best in 10:36.38, leading a pack of Sunbirds that made up a majority of the event.
Nikki Crouch matched her season best in the pole vault and sits 10
th in the country in the event.
Jesse Franco had a strong day in men's throws, taking 4
th in the hammer with a throw of 55.58m and delivered a season and lifetime best in the shot put at 16.22.
Moe Bradley took third in the discus with a 45.16.
"We had a good showing today and are ready for what we consider to be the championship segment of the season starting with April track meets," Fresno Pacific head coach
Ray Winter said. "We are so proud of our sprints squad for having historic breakthroughs today, particularly
Isaac Davis, and our two top women, Madison and Zara.
Hope Erwin did something special in the shot put, and it will be fun to watch her continue to progress throughout the season."
Fresno Pacific continues the championship push at the West Coast Relays on March 31
st at Veteran's Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School.
