FRESNO, Calif.- Shaking off a difficult stretch of matches coming off of a long break the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-7 overall) grabbed a crucial 4-0 win against PacWest foe Colorado Mesa Mavericks (5-9 overall) during a break in the rain Sunday afternoon at the Haak Tennis Complex.
With the rain condensing the slate of games planned for Sunday, the Sunbirds took advantage of the clinch format to win every finished match in a game that matters to FPU's playoff hopes.
Martin Ramirez and
Gregor Kliimask kept the momentum going from their Saturday win in doubles with a quick 6-3 win on court no. 3.
Brodie Sodersten and
Joshua Wong secured the doubles point by holding on a 6-3 win as well.
Sven Bangert and
Ben Cronau were also winning in doubles, up 5-4, when their match was left unfinished.
Wong quickly grabbed FPU's second point of the day, winning 6-3, 6-4 in #3 singles for a 2-0 Sunbirds' lead.
Sodersten navigated through a back and forth match in #1 singles to earn the third point for the Sunbirds.
It was Cronau that sealed the match with his 2
nd singles win at #2 singles this season, snapping a five-match losing streak with a thrilling three set victory.
That was enough to clinch the victory for FPU on the day as the compacted schedule halted the remaining matches in play.
The Sunbirds initially hoped to play two matches on Sunday but rain pushed back both matches, with FPU aiming to take on MSU Denver on Monday. A start time has not been announced.
