Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Monk's Career Night Not Enough for FPU against CUH

FRESNO, Calif.-Despite Freshman Kyle Monk's career night, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (6-15 overall, 3-11 PacWest) were plagued by turnovers against a hot-shooting team and dropped a 96-72 against the Chaminade Silverswords (12-13 overall, 7-10 PacWest) Saturday evening in the Special Events Center.

Monk delivered a career-high 19 points and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He was flanked by seniors Darrin Person Jr. and Nate Kendricks who both finished in double-figures, with Person Jr. finishing one rebound shy of a double-double.

But FPU struggled to keep pace with the high scoring Silverswords who knocked down 13 three-pointers and had five players score in double-figures.

"I think it was more connected with our offensive performance than our defensive performance," Fresno Pacific head coach C.J. Haydock said. "We take bad shots and turn it over and that let them get going.

The Sunbirds also hampered their effort by committing 16 turnovers that turned into 20 points for Chaminade.

Much of those points came early and helped Chaminade string together a number of small runs and build a double-digit advantage at half.

FPU shot 40% from the field for the game but couldn't keep pace with Chaminade's long distance shooting, going just 6-28 from three.

Monk was the bright spot, knocking down five of those threes, including four in the first half.

"Kyle is a special human," Haydock said of his freshman. "We knew it was going to show up in his habits. His work ethic, his commitment to do extra. This was always coming with Kyle and its going to keep getting brighter as the year
goes."

The Sunbirds will host the final game of the homestand on Monday when Concordia-Irvine comes to the Special Event Center. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
