Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

'Birds Dominant Paint, Glass to Sweep Season Series from CUI

FRESNO, Calif.-After overcoming a slew early turnovers, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (7-15 overall, 4-11 PacWest) dominated the glass and the paint to knock off the Concordia Eagles (5-15 overall, 4-11 PacWest) 68-59 Monday night at the Special Events Center.

"It took us a little bit to find it," Fresno Pacific head coach C.J. Haydock said. "Our scout execution, we had some let downs, but really good across the board. We had really good rebounding as well. Guys stepped up and made plays."

Darrin Person Jr. delivered 16 points and 9 rebounds in 22 minutes and Nate Kendricks , Kyle Monk and Spencer Heimerdinger each had 11 as Fresno Pacific withstood a slow start.

Fresno Pacific overcame five turnovers on its first six possessions but the game remained nearly even at 6-5 through the first five minutes.

When the Sunbirds offense held onto the ball, they shot a scorching 60% for the next ten minutes and staked themselves to a double-digit lead.

Concordia cut the difference to five at the half.

But Fresno Pacific roared out of the break behind a consistent paint prescence.

The Sunbirds also knocked down four of their six three-pointers in the second half as the balanced attack helped the lead balloon to 22 midway through the period.

Concordia made it a game late, whittling the difference down to 9 with a few minutes left.

FPU received a big basket in the final stretch from D.J. Searcy to reset the lead and seal the game.

Person added 9 rebounds as FPU held a +18 advantage on the glass and the Sunbirds converted 9 offensive rebounds into 13 points.

Redshirt Freshman Ryas Vang delivered key minutes off the bench for FPU as well.

"He's just ready," Haydock said of his guard. "He's an incredible human. Winners win. We needed him for eight-minutes there tonight. Ryas never played point guard until he got to college. And then we need him down the stretch. That's who we want to be."

Fresno Pacific sets out on a four-game road trip that will take them through Hawai'i and back to the Bay Area before they return home for Senior Day on February 25th against Holy Names.
