Sven Bangert's return win and a pair of three set victories, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-2 overall) grabbed their first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over the Holy Names Hawks (0-2 overall) Wednesday afternoon on the Meyer Tennis Courts at Mills College.
Bangert won his first singles match of the year, pulling out a three set victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, that put Fresno Pacific one point away clinching the match.
Bangert's doubles partner,
Ben Cronau, sealed the match in the Sunbirds favor with a three-set victory of his own by bouncing back 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 6-1 on court one to grab the fourth point of the day.
The duo also set Fresno Pacific on the right course in doubles, winning 6-2 on court two.
Gregor Kliimask and
Martin Ramirez earned the doubles victory with a 6-4 win.
Already up 1-0,
Brodie Sodersten cruised to Fresno Pacific's only straight set victory of the day, winning on court 2 by scores of 6-2 in both sets.
That set up Bangert and Cronau to seal the other two points for FPU to earn its first win of the year.
After those both went three sets,
Pablo Zubieta bounced back after dropping his first set to tack on another point, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The 'Birds continue to play well in doubles but added a slew of singles victories to earn their first team win of the season.
