Historic Day Kickstarts Sunbirds' Season

RESULTS
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-
Led by a handful of historic performances, the Fresno Pacific track and field team delivered an excellent start to the season at the Westmont University Sunshine Indoor Open on Saturday.

Dejan Mileusnic comfortably won the javelin with a winning mark of 71.75m, 27 meters better than second place.
Mileusnic set the stadium record at Westmont last march while competing unattached but still managed to break the Fresno Pacific record by 20 feet in his first showing as a Sunbird.

Jesse Franco, competing in multiple events, delivered a solid showing of 40.28m to take third place.

The women had a couple entries for the record-book as well with the distance medley relay team of Alexa Queenan, Brianna Green, Jasmine Conchas, and Yorkabel Gebrehiwot placing 9th in the Fresno Pacific top 10 list with a time of 13:01.25.

In the 3000 meter, Gebrehiwot won her heat and took 3rd overall to place 10th in Fresno Pacific history books. Julissa Avila and Maribel Aguilar placed 4th and 5th in the event and Alexa Queenan took 8th as Fresno Pacific had strong showings throughout.

Hope Erwin added another FPU top 10 entry at the event, with a mark of 12.52 meters (41-07 feet).

Madison Flores dominated in the 200 meters, setting a personal record of 24.09, winning the event, and solidifying 3rd all-time in the Fresno Pacific record books.

The Sunbirds three 4 x 400 meter relay teams were separated by just five seconds and took 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

The women's 4 x 400 relay won the event with Zara Anthony, Ariana Vera, Alexis Ranger-Dunbar, and Iyanna Fuller combining for a 4:03.80 to win the finals by nearly four seconds.

The team of Daniel Binns, Casey Watkins, Obinna Elendu, and Hudson Flores ran a 3:35.58 for the best showing. Cullen Bates, Makahri Wadley, Parker Brandt, and Russell Zelazo were just over a second behind with a 3:36.86 to earn the points for Fresno Pacific.

Zara Anthony also took 2nd in the 60-meter sprint for a fast day among the sprinters.

For the men, Rodney Chemalmal edged out a win in the 3000 meters, winning by .26 with a time of 8:51.40 to take first place.

Garrett Fox took 2nd in the 200-meter but was kept out of the record books due to the windy conditions, still posting a 21.56 with teammate Mark Smith was right behind him for 3rd.

Devin Kelly set a personal best in the long jump with a 6.72m mark to take 2nd place to teammate Isaac Davis's 7.18m 1st place jump.

Kelly also finished 2nd in the triple jump to another teammate, Adrian Hodges. Hodges 1st place jump of 14.29m and Kelly's 13.24m jump eclipsed the entire field.

The men's distance medley relay also shined as Kalobe Jimenez, Bryan Banuelos, Bo Olsen, and Jake Resendez won the event with a 10:22.46 good for 7th in the program's record books.

Moe Bradley won the shot put to put an exclamation mark on Fresno Pacific's full team effort proved both a valuable and historic ice-breaker in Southern California.

"Even on somewhat of a windy day that hinders most of the running events," Fresno Pacific head coach Ray Winter said of the team's performance. "We still had a very strong performance that demonstrated our potential as well as showcased our mental readiness just to work, focus, and compete. Our field events really came out of the gate strong as an opener for the team and it was great to see all of the running, throughout all of the distances, compete really well."

Fresno Pacific will return to Fresno next weekend to host its lone home event of the spring, splitting events between Sunnyside High School and Ramirez Field on Saturday, February 18th. Livestream of the event will be available for free.
