SAN RAFAEL, Calif.-Down by a pair of goals in the final fifteen minutes, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-8-2 overall, 2-5-2 PacWest) rallied behind sophomore striker
Lucas Ribeiro to score a pair of late goals and steal a point on the road against the conference rival Dominican Penguins (6-2-2 overall, 8-5-4 PacWest) to spoil the hosts Senior Day Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
The Sunbirds had the PacWest's 2
nd place team level for the first 43 minutes but Dominican capitalized on a throw in just before halftime.
The Penguins took a throw in the attacking third and put the ball in the box before a flick created a chance that they converted for the match's first goal.
Dominican doubled the lead in the second half just before the hour mark.
But FPU found its response as
Chris Macias received a pass from
Lucas Ribeiro and dribbled down the right flank before curling a shot inside the post to pull FPU back within one in the 77
th minute.
The 'Birds nearly found the equalizer in the 84
th minute when
Taran Williams' cross was headed on target by Ribeiro, but the Dominican keeper made a diving save to preserve the scoreline.
Fresno Pacific did find the magic touch three minutes later as Williams navigated into the box after some deft dribbling from Ribeiro. Williams dropped the ball back to Ribeiro who blasted it into the back of the net for the equalizer.
The Macias goal was the third time this year that he was setup by Ribeiro with the combination helping to score two other goals as well this season.
The goal was also Macias' fifth and Ribeiro's fifth assist on the season, putting the Brazilian back in the top ten in the PacWest in the category.
The Sunbirds will wrap up the 2023 season on Saturday when they host conference champion Point Loma for Senior Night beginning at 5 p.m.
Both senior ceremonies will take place after the men's game and prior to the women's game, which is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
