FRESNO, Calif.-A goal in the 20
th minute proved the difference against the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-9-2 overall, 2-6-2 PacWest) in 1-0 loss to the PacWest Champion Point Loma Sea Lions (12-4-1 overall, 8-1-1 PacWest) Saturday night at Ramirez Field.
While Point Loma was playing for its first ever PacWest Championship on the men's side, Fresno Pacific was playing to send out 12 seniors on a high note.
The Sea Lions broke through a tight contest 19:05 into the match when Felix Calero's shot was deflected and angled into the goal.
The Sunbirds were on their heels for much of the rest of the half but Senior goalkeeper
Sergio Sierra made four saves to keep the match within striking distance.
Sierra was under more fire in the second half as well and denied a pair of surefire goals that would have given the Sea Lions comfort.
Instead, Fresno Pacific forced Point Loma's defense to be on its toes for the entire 90 minutes with seniors
Antonioangel Lepe and
Denis Haeberle putting shots on goal.
But it was Point Loma's night as time for an equalizer ran out on FPU and the Sunbirds were unable to send the seniors off with points.
Fresno Pacific ends the season in ninth place in the PacWest.
