'Birds Drop Match Against Golden Eagles

IRVINE, Calif. –A strong second set wasn't enough as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds fell 3-1 to the Concordia University Golden Eagles Thursday night at CU Arena in Irvine.
 
 The Sunbirds took an early four-point lead in the first after three errors on the Golden Eagles and a kill from Corinne Acosta.
 
Seven straight points for the Golden Eagles saw them retake the lead before the 'Birds answered with a four-point run of their own to tie the set again 11-11.
 
The Golden Eagles won eight of the next ten points to open their lead up to six 19-13.
 
Kills by Mia Gilcrest, Makena Ogas, errors on the Golden Eagles, and a service ace from McKenna Hughes brought the Sunbirds back within one 21-20.
 
The late run wasn't enough however as the Golden Eagles took the first set 25-22.
 
In the second set, both teams traded leads and points. The early points for the Sunbirds was highlighted by kills from Claire Corippo, Ogas and Gilcrest as well as a pair of team blocks.
 
At 20-20, the Sunbirds went on a five-point run to take the second set 25-20. A service ace from Acosta secured the first point and then a kill from Corippo sealed the deal after three errors on the Golden Eagles.
 
CUI started off the third set strong taking the early lead.
 
The Sunbirds managed to get within three at 10-7, but it was as close as the Sunbirds would get as the Golden Eagles dominated the third taking the set 25-14.
 
The dominance of the Golden Eagles continued into the fourth as they took another early lead.
 
At 17-9, the 'Birds managed to string together five straight points off a pair of kills from Madison Girnius and three errors on CUI to bring themselves back within four.
 
It was as close as the Sunbirds would get as the Golden Eagles took the fourth set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
 
Ogas, Acosta, and Gilcrest all finished with ten kills or more with Ogas leading at 13.
 
 The Sunbirds end their road trip Saturday with a matchup against the undefeated in conference Point Loma Sea Lions Saturday at 2pm at Golden Gymnasium.
