Sunbirds Drop Final Games of Lancer Joust

LA MIRADA, Calif.- The offensive struggles continued for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (3-14 overall) who fell to the Loyola Marymount Lions (11-5 overall) and the Santa Clara Broncos (9-7 overall) in the final games of the Lancer Joust. 

The Lions opened the 1st period scoring five unanswered goals to take an early commanding lead. 

The first goal of the match for the Sunbirds came in the 2nd period came in the 3rd minute as Pietro Cattano found the back of the net off the assist from Eugenio Maldonado

LMU ended the 2nd quarter with two more goals to take a 7-1 lead into the half. 

The Sunbirds continued to struggle offensively as the Lions converted three more goals off of three turnovers to take a 10-1 lead. 

LMU would score another goal before the Sunbirds broke through in the final minutes off a pair of goals from Cattano as time expired. 

Cattano would be the lone goal scorer for the Sunbirds recording all three goals. 

In the second game of the afternoon, the Broncos would come out hot scoring two goals in the first two minutes. 

The Sunbirds countered with a goal of their own from William Green to bring the Sunbirds back within one. 

Santa Clara would end the 1st period with three more goals taking a 5-1 lead into the 2nd. 

The Broncos would add two more goals before the Sunbirds broke through with a goal from Forrest Gray off of a powerplay. 

Three more goals in the 3rd would increase the Broncos lead to ten.

In the 3rd minute, the Sunbirds broke the scoring drought with back-back goals from Cole Sjoblom and Gray to bring Fresno Pacific back within single digits before the Broncos scored less than a minute later. 

Heading into the 4th down 14-4, the Sunbirds opened the half with another pair of goals from Maldonado and Scott Tashima to bring the 'Birds back within eight. 

Despite shutting out the Broncos for the remainder of the 4th, the Sunbirds would fail to convert anymore posessions falling to the Broncos 14-6. 

Fresno Pacific will head home to host the Biola Eagles for their first WWPA home match of the season Friday at 6:30pm at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center.
