'Birds Drop Heartbreaker to Eagles

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds conceded a heart-breaking final minute goal to the Biola Eagles to fall 15-14 Friday night at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center. 

The game opened with two straight goals from the Eagles, before Eugenio Maldonado answered off the power play to put the Sunbirds on the board for the first goal of the night. 

Back-to-back goals from the Eagles and the Sunbirds kept the Biola lead at one until Christian Clark on the next Sunbird possession found the back of the net to give the game it's first tie at 3-3. 

The 2nd period began with both teams trading turnovers. 

In the 6th and 5th minute, Biola capitalized on two straight chances to retake the lead 5-3. 

Out of a timeout and off a power play, Maldonado scored his second goal of the game off the assist from Pietro Cattano to bring the 'Birds back within one. 

Biola and Fresno Pacific would both convert on their next two possessions, allowing the Eagles would maintain the one goal 8-7 lead heading into the half. 

In their first possession of the 3rd, the Sunbird's Scott Tashima scored off the power play to tie the game 8-8. 

A saved five-meter penalty shot by Ethan McLaughlin set the 'Birds up on the next play to take their first lead of the game as William Green scored his first goal of the game off the assist by Forrest Gray

The lead was short lived as the Eagles countered back to tie the game 9-9. 

Maldonado would add to his score sheet with back-back goals to give the Sunbirds their largest lead of the game at two heading into the final minutes of the 3rd period. 

Off a power play in the last two minutes, the Eagles scored to end the 3rd 11-10.

Forrest Gray opened the 4th period with his first goal of the match.

The Eagles answered with two goals to tie the score 12-12 in the 5th minute. 

A pair of goals from both teams kept the score knotted heading into the final minutes of the game. 

In the 3rd minute, Maldonado converted off the power play for his sixth goal of the match to bring the 'Birds back up one.

Biola answered quickly off a power play of their own to keep the game tied at 14-14 with two minutes left. 

Both teams would trade a pair of turnovers, until with 30 seconds left the Sunbirds were called for an exclusion giving the Eagles another power play. 

The Eagles would convert with 20 seconds left taking their first lead of the game since the 2nd period. 

In the final seconds, Gray attempt a shot but the Eagle's Mitchell Carpenter made the save to end the game and thwart the 'Birds upset bid.

Seven Sunbirds scored with Maldonado leading the way with six.

Green ended the night with two goals, four assists, and three steals, one of his best performances of the season. 

Fresno Pacific will be back in the pool tomorrow for their annual Alumni Game at the Clovis North Aquatic Center at 1pm before heading back into competition next weekend at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament in Northern California.
