SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (8-10 overall, 4-5 PacWest) started the first game of their four game road trip strong with a four set victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banna Slugs (12-13 overall).
The 'Birds came out swinging early in the first set off errors on the Banna Slugs, kills from Corrine Acosta and
Makena Ogas, along with a service ace by
Cambria Waites to take an early lead 7-0.
Once taking the early lead, the Sunbirds kept the foot on the gas never surrendering the lead and capturing the first set 25-22.
The second set proved more tightly contested with UC Santa Cruz jumping out to an early lead with a pair of a service aces and an error on the Sunbirds.
Fresno Pacific countered back to tie the score 4-4 off a service ace by
Presley Hamilton and another kill from Ogas.
The errors however continued for the Sunbirds who quickly fell behind as the Banna Slugs capitalized taking the second set 25-21.
The third set opened with UC Santa Cruz again taking an early lead.
Fresno Pacific countered with a five point run to take the lead 6-5 with errors on the Banna Slugs, a kill from
Mia Gilcrest, and a block by
Geneva Elliott.
The Sunbirds maintained the lead going on a six point run to take the commanding lead 22-12.
The last three points for the 'Birds to take the third set 25-15 came from a pair of kills from Ogas and a error on UC Santa Cruz.
Early in the fourth, the Sunbirds and Banna Slugs traded points.
With the score tied 10-10, Elliott delivered a crucial kill allowing the Sunbirds to go on a three point run to take their first lead in the set 14-10.
The runs continued for the Sunbirds off kills from
Madison Girnius, Ogas, and Elliott.
UC Santa Cruz created a five point run of their own to bring themselves back within four after being down as many as nine.
Service aces from
Rachel Plantinga and Accosta and a kill by
Claire Corippo sealed the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
It was an overall team effort with eight players registering one kill or more with Ogas leading the way at 17 and Waites recording 25 assists.
Fresno Pacific will head to Honolulu, Hawaii to take on the Chaminade Silverswords Friday at 10pm PT at McCabe Gymnasium.
