Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sunbirds Fall Short in First Road Test of the Season

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team (1-2-1, 0-0 PacWest) went on the road for the first time in 2022 on Saturday, travelling to Cal State San Bernardino (1-1, 0-0 CCAA), falling 2-0.

The first chance for the Sunbirds came in the sixth minute off the foot of Tori De Leon, forcing the Coyote goalkeeper to make her first save of the game.

Monique Nevarez was able to make two saves early in the half, but San Bernardino was finally able to put one in the net in the 29th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sunbirds had three more chances, including a shot three minutes before halftime from Maiya-Ann Serrao that was saved and another from Alena Schenk that was blocked, and the Coyotes were able to take their one-goal advantage into the break.

San Bernardino was able to get a shot off early to begin the second half, but Chiara Soergel – a second-half sub in goal for FPU – was able to make the save.

The Coyotes continued to control the pace on the offensive side of the field, but the Sunbird defense continued to stay strong, keeping them out of the net and holding on to the one-goal deficit.

De Leon had another good look in the 74th minute, but it was saved again by San Bernardino.

After some physical play by both teams, the Coyotes were able to double their lead in the 86th minute to make it 2-0.

The Sunbirds had one more chance late in the game off the foot of Nayelli Flores, but it was saved again, and San Bernardino held on for the win.

FPU will return home next week when they host Cal State San Marcos on Thursday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
