FRESNO, Calif. – The FPU women's soccer team (1-2-2, 0-0 PacWest) went head-to-head with CSU San Marcos (2-1-2, 0-0 CCAA) on Thursday night, finishing in a 0-0 deadlock despite plenty of chances on the offensive end.
The first chance came in the 18
th minute off the foot of
Nadia Flores, who forced the San Marcos keeper to make a save.
The two teams traded shots with one coming from
Brooke Uceda in the 33
rd minute, but
Monique Nevarez was forced to make her first save of the game in the 35
th minute to keep the game level at 0-0.
Mackenzie Madron was able to put pressure on the San Marcos defense with a shot on goal in the 41
st minute, followed by a shot from
Tori De Leon in the 42
nd minute. Madron added one more in the 45
th minute, but time expired shortly after to send the game to halftime at 0-0.
The second half started similar to the first with the Sunbirds getting off the first shot of the period. This time it was
Diana Garcia, but the San Marcos keeper was able to stop it for the save.
After both teams missed the mark on shots, the Cougars had their best chance of the night in the 77
th minute, but Nevarez was able to lay out and make the key save.
As time was winding down, the Sunbirds were able to earn a corner kick which resulted in a shot from
Ariana Quintero that was blocked by a San Marcos defender just before the final buzzer.
FPU finished the game with 10 shots, five in each half with only one corner kick. Nevarez tallied three saves in the shutout.
The Sunbirds will be back in action on Sept. 15 when they travel to CSU Dominguez Hill is their final non-conference matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
