Quick Strikes Befall FPU in Biola Loss

LA MIRADA, Calif.-The most promising chances turned sour quickly in the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-5 overall, 0-2 PacWest) 6-0 loss to the Biola Eagles (2-3-3 overall, 1-0 PacWest) Thursday night at Al Barbour Field.

Fresno Pacific surrendered a pair of early goals and saw their hosts counter some of the most promising chances in their second loss to start conference play.

Biola struck in the fourth minute as a header setup a through ball that got behind the Fresno Pacific defense. Biola was able to deliver a cross in front of the goal that was headed back to the near post for the 1-0 advantage.

FPU conceded a second goal in the 11th minute when Biola's counter-attack set up the Eagles with numbers in front of the goal. A cross at the top of the '18 was leveled across the turf into the bottom left corner of the net, putting the Sunbirds in a 2-0 hole with nearly 80 minutes of regulation.

In the 16th minute, Fresno Pacific developed its best chance as Omri Schwartz setup Lucas Ribeiro outside the '18 and the freshman ripped a curving shot towards the top-right corner of the net, but Biola keeper JD Gunn stretched out to secure the save and preserve the score line.

Biola snuck in one more goal right before the break, taking possession and setting up a one-timer to expand the difference to 3-0 in the 45th minute.

Fresno Pacific built an attack in the 52nd minute and had a promising shot blocked. While the Sunbirds maintained possession momentarily, Biola launched a lightning quick counter-attack that led to a 1-on-1 and their fourth goal of the match.

The Sunbirds goalkeeper, Elmer Carballo, and defense faced a bevy of attacks from Biola including 15 shots in the first hour.

Biola tacked on another in the 68th minute when the pressure created an opportunity behind the Sunbirds' back line and a tap in to increase the difference to 5-0.

The final goal of the match came in the 86th minute for Biola as the Eagles converted another counter into a long cross that was met with an in-air volley to finalize the scoreline at 6-0.

FPU conceded twice as many shots as they took and faced nearly double the shots on goal as they were able to muster.

Fresno Pacific travels further south on Saturday, taking on Point Loma at 2 p.m. in San Diego.
