Early Goal, Penalties Ground Sunbirds at PLNU

SAN DIEGO-An early foul proved costly in the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds' (2-6 overall, 0-3 PacWest) 2-0 loss to the Point Loma Sea Lions (4-3-2 overall, 1-0 PacWest) Saturday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.

Point Loma wasted little time taking the lead, drawing a penalty three-minutes into the contest and scoring on Marlon Buck's goal.

Neither team cracked the score line for the rest of the half, but Fresno Pacific conceded a majority of the opportunities. PLNU outshot FPU 7-3 in the first half.

Fresno Pacific was called for 13 fouls in the first 45 minutes, compared to Point Loma's 4. But the Sea Lions were issued a pair of yellow cards, accounting for half of their penalties.

Seven minutes into the second half, Elmer Carballo kept the score line level with an incredible diving save to his right, deflecting a shot that came on a through ball for Point Loma.

Just before the hour mark, Point Loma created another opportunity right in front of the end line. A pass back to the middle of the box landed where Abel Balogh shot through traffic and snuck the goal in past another fantastic effort from Carballo, improving PLNU's lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute.

The physicality remained throughout the second half as FPU was given three yellow cards in the final twenty minutes and called for 24 total fouls in the match. PLNU was called for just 7 fouls in the contest.

Point Loma had a couple more near chances late that were either directed away by Carballo or waived off due to off-side calls.

Fresno Pacific, with three conference matches already under its belt, will return home on Tuesday, hosting UC Santa Cruz at 5 p.m. on Ramirez Field.
