Seawolves Top Sunbirds in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.-A physical, tough contest went against the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-2 overall) as they fell 2-0 to the Sonoma State Seawolves (2-1-2 overall)

The Sunbirds had a few chances in the first half as freshmen Lucas Riibeiro and Chris Macias pushed the tempo.

But it was Omri Schwartz and Julian Aran Martin who registered the lone shots on goal for Fresno Pacific in the first half.

Sonoma State drew more corner kicks than FPU had shots, and the Seawolves found the back of the net in on the third try when Federico Barbieri headed in the cross from Nathan Arnott in the 32nd minute putting Fresno Pacific in a 1-0 hole.

The Sunbirds upped their attack in the 2nd half, but so did Sonoma State as the Seawolves doubled the amount of shots FPU took, 8-4.

Fresno Pacific had a chance with under 20 minutes left, getting the ball into the box, but Sonoma State countered and Ulysses Vega countered playing Bryan Rosales into a one-on-one situation down the right side of the pitch. Rosales beat Hunter Shephard across to the far side of the goal, doubling Sonoma State's lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute.

Shephard was pressed throughout, making four saves to keep the Sunbirds around throughout his 80 minutes.

Elmer Carballo came in for the last ten minutes and contributed a fantastic diving save as well.

The ending of the match got chippy. After three yellows were issued in the first half, a physical play led to a straight red card on Fresno Pacific. Two Seawolves received red cards shortly after.

FPU will have one more non-conference match before opening PacWest play on September 21st.

The Sunbirds are on the road against Westmont on September 17th before opening PacWest play at Dominican on September 21st.

They will return home to play Holy Names on September 24th.
