FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team opened its final regular-season series on Tuesday against No. 3 Point Loma, falling 6-2 in game one followed by a 18-15 loss in game two.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sunbirds jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Andrew Valdez hit a two-out home run over the left-field fence.
- In the bottom of the second, Andrue Lackey led things off with a single and advanced to third on a single from Matt McGrady. He then scored on a balk to make it 2-0 after two innings.
- The Sea Lions were able to get on the board in the third and fourth innings, taking a 4-2 lead with two runs in each inning.
- Neither team was able to score in the fifth or sixth innings, but Point Loma was able to add to its lead in the seventh and eighth innings to go up 6-2, which they would hold on to for the win.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Lackey went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
- Valdez hit a home run to drive in a run and score one as well.
- Justin Fuson struck out three batters in five innings pitched.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, Point Loma was able to put up five runs in the top of the second inning to go up 5-0.
- The Sunbirds got one back thanks to a two-out bomb from Cole Yoshida to make it 5-1.
- The Sea Lions scored two more in the top of the third to make it 7-1, but FPU responded in the bottom half with a five spot to make it 7-6.
- A leadoff single from Tommy Rover followed by a passed ball put a runner in scoring position with no outs.
- The Sea Lions ended up getting back-to-back outs to keep Rover on second but with two outs. A single from A. Valdez plated Rover to make it 7-2.
- A single from McGrady put runners on first and second with two outs, and A. Valdez was brought in to score thanks to a Lackey single to right-center field making it 7-3 with runners on the corners.
- Donte Valdez was able to cut the deficit to one run thanks to one swing of the bat that put the ball over the left-center field wall.
- Point Loma didn't let the Sunbirds have the momentum for long, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 10-6.
- FPU didn't go away, though, scoring three runs of their own to get the deficit back to just one run.
- With one out, Rover was able to single through the right side. He was brought in thanks to a no-doubt home run off the bat of Khalid Johnson to make it 10-8.
- Back-to-back singles from Jared Aguilar and A. Valdez put runners on first and second with just one out, and McGrady was hit by the pitch to load the bases.
- A sacrifice fly from Lackey plated Aguilar, and with runners on the corners, D. Valdez just barely missed one that was caught at the center-field warning track to end the inning.
- Point Loma came to the plate in the fifth inning and put up seven runs in the inning to go up 17-9.
- After neither team scored in the sixth inning and Anthony Torres was able to keep the Sea Lions off the board in the top of the seventh, the Sunbirds were able to add two runs in the bottom half to cut the Point Loma lead to six runs.
- With one out, D. Valdez and Yoshida were able to hit a single and a double, respectively, to put runners on second and third.
- With two outs, Rover was able to drive in D. Valdez and Yoshida with a single up the middle.
- The Sea Lions were able to get one of those back in the top of the eighth to make it 18-11, but a one-out grand slam from D. Valdez cut the lead to just three going into the final inning.
- Torres tossed his fourth and one-third inning of relief in the top of the ninth, shutting down the Sea Lions and giving the Sunbirds a chance in the bottom half of the inning, down just three runs.
- FPU was able to get Aguilar on base with two outs after a hit by pitch, but the Sea Lions closer was able to earn the save and finish the doubleheader with a sweet.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- D. Valdez showed off the power in a 3-for-5 day with two home runs, including a grand slam, and seven RBI.
- A. Valdez went 5-for-6 at the plate with five singles, two runs scored and one RBI.
- Yoshida went deep in a 2-for-4 outing with two runs scored and one RBI.
- Rover went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
- Torres was big in relief, pitching four and one-third innings with six strikeouts and only giving up one run, which was unearned.
UP NEXT
The Blue and Orange will close out its regular season with a doubleheader against Point Loma on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. They plan to honor their seniors between games.
