Sunbirds Lose Final Two to Close Out Season

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team closed out its regular season on Wednesday, dropping both games of the doubleheader against No. 4 Point Loma. They lost game one 14-7, followed by a 14-9 loss in the seven-inning game two.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Lions were able to go up 2-0 after scoring a run in each of the second and third innings, but the Sunbirds were able to respond in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own to tie the game.
  • Cole Yoshida led things off with a double that bounced off of third base. After a wild pitch advanced him to third base, Kyle Willman was able to draw a four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners with no outs.
  • After back-to-back strikeouts, a single from Jared Aguilar drove in Yoshida with an infield single to third base, putting runners on second and third.
  • Another single from Andrew Valdez that went up the middle plated Willman to tie the game 2-2.
  • After a scoreless fourth inning, Point Loma started their run, scoring 12 unanswered to go up 14-2 after eight and a half innings of play.
  • The Sunbirds started a rally in the ninth that plated five runs, but the Sea Lions were able to hold them off to end the game.
  • To start the bottom of the ninth, Mitchell Silvas singled through the left side, which was followed by another single from Matt McGrady up the middle to put runners on first and second with no outs.
  • With one out, a Donte Valdez walk loaded the bases for Yoshida, who hit a single through the left side to bring in Damien Holmes and Nolan Brown, who entered in as pinch runners.
  • A walk to Ben Jungbluth loaded the bases back up, and then three more walks to Garret Santos, Shane Pursell and Isaiah Clark plated three more runs for the Sunbirds to make it 14-7.
  • Point Loma would later get an out at home force a fly out to end the game.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Yoshida went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring two with a double.
  • Pursell, Aguilar, Clark, A. Valdez and Santos each brought in a run.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first frame, the Sea Lions opened things up quickly in the second inning, scoring eight runs on six hits.
  • In the bottom of the third, the Sunbirds were able to get one back after Aguilar led the inning off with a single and was brought in thanks to an RBI triple from A. Valdez.
  • Point Loma got that run back in the top of the fourth, but four runs from the Sunbirds made it a 9-5 game.
  • It started when Willman hit a leadoff single right back up the middle that hit the Sea Lion pitcher. A single from Rover advanced him to third, and a bobble from the right fielder allowed Rover to reach second.
  • A single from Khalid Johnson brought in Willman and put runners at the corners before Johnson stole second, tying the PacWest Conference single-season record with 33 stolen bags.
  • A single from Aguilar plated Rover and put Johnson on third, and then A. Valdez's second triple of the game brought in Johnson.
  • In the top of the fifth, The Sea Lions were able to plate two runs to make it 11-5, but FPU was able to get both back in the bottom half to get the deficit back to just four.
  • It started with a leadoff single from D. Valdez followed by a ground-rule double from Yoshida to put runners on second and third with no outs. A wild pitch brought in D. Valdez, advancing Yoshida to third, and then a sacrifice fly from Willman plated Yoshida.
  • Johnson went on to get a two-out single and break the PacWest single-season stolen bases record, and he was brought in by Aguilar to make it 11-8.
  • With Aguilar on second, A. Valdez hit one hard to the Point Loma second baseman who mishandled it, allowing him to reach first and Aguilar to score, putting the Sunbirds within two after five innings.
  • After Aguilar, who moved from first base to the mound in the fourth inning, shut the Sea Lions down in the top of the sixth, the Sunbirds had an opportunity to cut into the two-run deficit in the bottom half with the bases loaded, but they were unable to bring a run in, sending the game into the final inning at 11-9.
  • The Sea Lions found a way to plate three runs in the top of the seventh, extending their lead to five heading into the bottom of the final inning.
  • Point Loma was able to hold the Sunbirds scoreless and get the win and series sweep.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • A. Valdez went 3-for-5 at the plate with two triples and three runs batted in.
  • Aguilar went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and two runs batted in. He also pitched four innings of relief and struck out three batters.
  • Yoshida went 3-for-4 and scored a run.
  • Johnson had two singles and stole two bases.
BEYOND THE BOX

Johnson's two stolen bases gave him 33 on the season, which a single-season PacWest record.
