Late Goals Lift Sunbirds Over Golden Knights at WWPA Championships

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's water polo team took on Gannon in the consolation bracket of the Western Water Polo Association Championships on Saturday morning. The Sunbirds trailed by a goal in the final quarter, but clutch goals from Rosemary Chapman and Tatum Benson gave the Sunbirds enough to beat the Golden Knights 10-8 and advance to the fifth-place match on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got on the board first, but Hannah Walker responded with a goal that tied the game at one nearly three minutes into the match. 
  • Later in the quarter, All-WWPA First Team member Amy Zaninovich ripped one past the keeper to tie the game 2-2. 
  • Chapman gave the Birds their first lead of the match, finding the back of the net with 2:41 remaining in the first period.
  • Madison Jacques scored the final goal of the quarter for FPU, as the Sunbirds held a 4-3 lead after the first eight minutes. 
  • The second quarter belonged to the Sunbirds, as they went on a 3-1 run over that span. 
  • Consecutive goals from Benson, Walker, and Alexandria Jasso gave the Birds a 7-4 lead at halftime. 
  • Gannon answered by scoring three goals and shutting out the Sunbirds in the third quarter, as the game was tied 7-7 going into the final quarter. 
  • Chapman scored back-to-back goals midway through the fourth quarter, creating separation for the Sunbirds by giving them a 9-7 lead. 
  • Benson sealed it with a goal in the final minute of the match, as the Birds went on to win it 10-8.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Chapman was clutch, totaling a team-high three goals, two of which came in the final quarter. 
  • Benson was excellent, scoring two goals while nabbing a team-high four steals. 
  • Camryn Berra made six saves in 32 minutes in goal for the Sunbirds.
