Sunbirds Take Sixth at WWPA Championships

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's water polo team played CSU Monterey Bay in the fifth-place game at the Western Water Polo Association Championships on Sunday. The two teams competed in a classic match, as a last-ditch effort from the Sunbirds was turned away from the Otters as they took 8-7.  
   
 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • FPU opened the match with back-to-back goals from Tatum Benson and Rosemary Chapman to go up 2-0. 
  • Benson scored another goal near the five-minute mark in the first quarter, giving the Birds a 3-1 lead.
  • The Otters tied the game 3-3 by the end of the first quarter. 
  • Benson opened the second quarter with her third goal of the game, giving the Sunbirds a 4-3 lead.
  • Monterey Bay scored a pair of goals in the second quarter and took a narrow 5-4 lead into halftime. 
  • After a goal from CSUMB, Amy Zaninovich brought the Sunbirds back to within one with a goal.
  • The Otters scored a goal with just two seconds left in the third quarter to go up 7-5. 
  • Chapman went back to work, scoring a goal with six minutes to play in the game. 
  • The Sunbirds were chasing two goals when Hannah Walker scored with 1:46 on the clock, bringing them to within a point of the Otters.
  • FPU made a late push, but it was thwarted by CSUMB, as they went on to take it 8-7.

  • Benson led everyone with three goals in Sunday's match.
  • Chapman found the back of the net twice. 
  • Camryn Berra made six saves in goal for the Sunbirds.
