Sunbirds Finish Series With A Split Against The Hawks

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team closed out the four-game road set at Holy Names on Saturday with a 15-3 win in game one but falling short 7-4 in game two, splitting the series.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all FPU from the start, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk from Khalid Johnson that plated Tommy Rover.
  • The Sunbirds extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Andrue Lackey scored on a fielder's choice.
  • In the fourth inning, FPU scored after Johnson and Garret Sanchos each stole a base, and a throwing error allowed Sanchos to cross home, making it 3-0.
  • Still in the fourth, Jared Aguilar hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Johnson, and Lackey capped off the three-run inning with a solo home run to straightaway center field.
  • The Hawks were able to respond in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to make it 5-2, but the Sunbirds exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth, making it 10-2.
  • It started when Aguilar hit an infield single to the short stop, scoring Santos for the second time in the game.
  • With the bases loaded, Matt McGrady hit a single to center field, scoring Aguilar and Johnson and advancing Lackey to third.
  • A double by Kyle Willman down the left-field line brought in Lackey and put runners on second and third with one out. That was followed by a sacrifice fly from Rover, bringing inn McGrady to end the inning.
  • After being held scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, FPU added five more runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.
  • A double from Damien Holmes brought in Santos and Jack Foote, and then a fielding error on a ball hit to center field by Mitchell Silvas brought in Holmes.
  • A single from Trent Greene plated Silvas, and Gavin VanGronigen capped off the five-run inning with a sacrifice fly, bringing in Greene.
  • The Hawks were able to score one run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Sunbirds were able to put the game away and get the win.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Lackey scored three runs in the game with a home run and drew three walks, going 1-for-1 at the plate.
  • Greene went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double after entering off the bench.
  • Justin Fuson pitched six innings with four strikeouts.
  • Brady Crow had three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sunbirds struck first after a Donte Valdez sacrifice fly in the first inning allowed Johnson to score.
  • FPU doubled its lead in the third inning on an RBI double from Rover that brought in Lackey.
  • The Hawks scored runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game 2-2, and they were able to take their first lead of the day in the fifth with two runs, making it 4-2.
  • The Sunbirds tied things up in the sixth when Nolan Brown and Rover scored a pair of unearned runs.
  • HNU re-took the lead in the sixth with three runs, giving them a 7-4 lead.
  • The Sunbirds were able to get the tying run to the plate with one out after singles from Lackey and Rover, but the Hawks were able to force a double play, sealing the series split.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Rover went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
  • Aguilar, Lackey, McGrady and Cole Yoshida each finished with a hit.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Blue and Orange kick off three straight weeks at home starting on Friday with a four-game PacWest series against Azusa Pacific. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, also starting at 12 p.m.
