FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team opened a four-game PacWest series against Azusa Pacific on Friday, and despite the offense putting up a combined 14 runs in the two games, they fell short 13-5 in game one, followed by a 15-9 loss in game two.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Sunbirds responded in the bottom half with one run of their own.
- It started when Khalid Johnson hit a leadoff double and was moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, Donte Valdez was able to bring Johnson in with a single up the middle to make it 2-1.
- After giving up two runs to open the game, Garrett Cooper settled in on the mound, sitting APU down in order in the second inning.
- In the bottom of the second, Cole Yoshida hit a one-out single to left field, and with two outs, he was able to swipe second base. He was later brought in by Jared Aguilar to tie the game 2-2.
- Cooper was able to post another 1-2-3 inning in the third, and the Sunbirds responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead after Andrew Valdez and Matt McGrady hit back-to-back one-out doubles.
- Cooper sat down his 10th Cougar in a row after another flawless inning, but FPU was unable to add to its lead in the bottom half.
- After scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth innings, the Cougars were able to tie things up with a run in the top of the seventh.
- A. Valdez led off the seventh with a triple, but the Sunbirds were unable to take advantage, keeping the game tied 3-3 headed to the eighth.
- APU was able to score two runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead, and after keeping FPU scoreless in the bottom half, they opened the game up with eight runs to take a 13-3 lead.
- The Sunbirds were able to add two more thanks to another RBI double from McGrady that scored D. Valdez and a sacrifice fly from Kyle Willman that plated A. Valdez, but it was all they could muster to close out the game.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- McGrady went 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles and two RBI's.
- Yoshida went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
- Cooper pitched seven innings and struck out four batters.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the second game of the day, APU jumped out two a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
- The Sunbirds responded with two runs of their own when Aguilar reached on a fielder's choice and a one-out double from Andrue Lackey put runners on second and third.
- Aguilar and Lackey both came in on a two-out single from D. Valdez to make it 3-2.
- After a scoreless top of the second, Yoshida led the bottom half off with his first home run of the season to straight-away center field on the first pitch he saw to tie the game 3-3.
- With one out, Aguilar singled to left field, followed by another double from Lackey to put runners on second and third with one out.
- With two outs, A. Valdez blasted one out to left-center field and cleared the wall to give the Sunbirds a 6-3 lead.
- Neither team crossed the plate in the third inning, but the Cougars were able to pop off for six runs in the fourth to make it 9-6.
- They were able to add another run in the fifth to go up 10-6, but the Sunbirds were able to get one back in the bottom half after Yoshida hit a two-out single and was brought in by Johnson, who hit a triple to right-center field.
- The Cougars extended their lead to 14-7 in the sixth inning, and then added one more in the ninth to make it 15-7.
- In the bottom of the ninth, the Sunbirds loaded the bases with no outs, and D. Valdez was able to score on a fielder's choice, making it 15-8 with runners on the corners and just one out.
- They added another when Yoshida singled to right-center field with two outs to bring in A. Valdez, but the Cougars were able to close the game out and sweep the doubleheader.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Yoshida went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBI's and two runs scored.
- A. Valdez went 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBI's and a run scored.
- Johnson had two hits, including a triple, with an RBI.
UP NEXT
The Blue and Orange will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader, scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
